Stage 1: PREPARATION
As part of the initial consultation, we agree on the Size and Orientation of the Canvas with the Client, we also agree any unique characteristics to be considered during the painting approach.

Stage 2: BACKGROUND
Time to get some paint on the canvas :)
At this stage, I am aiming to get a nice ‘uneven‘ block of colour on the background, which helps me to 'frame' the subject, as well as to help with an understanding of where to take the final look.
[This is just part of the 'Under-Painting' process, so I am not taking too much time on detail however, I am expecting to get a good feel for col
Stage 3: UNDER-PAINTING
Once I am happy with the tonal values as well as the overall hue and intensity of the colours, I continue to block in the subject, adding more and more definition and detail whilst paying particular attention to the 'light source' and 'direction of light' here too.
The light source is creating shadows and reflections which are absolutely critical to tricking the eye into see
Stage 4: ADDING DEPTH
At this point, I am using multiple ‘layers’ to build up and finalise the background, and also to really start to bring out the skin tones, adding highlights and shadows to give more depth to the overall tones /colour of the subject.

Stage 5: FINAL DETAIL
Here we continue with another layer for depth, whilst building in 'shapes' which are being created by the light in the subjects hair and dress, aiming to 'trick the viewers eye' into seeing much more detail than is really there.
Stage 6: SIGNATURE & COMPLETION
Once I am certain the painting is complete and ready for display, I associate myself with the artwork by adding my signature for authenticity.
